A Queensland woman has been left bewildered after winning a massive $150,000 prize on a Crossword scratchie, admitting she thought she had been pranked.

The Beenleigh woman couldn’t believe her eyes when she scratched the top prize on an Instant Scratch-Its ticket, saying she almost spilt her cup of tea in the heat of the moment.

The lucky $10 Jumbo Crosswords ticket was bought at Beenleigh Marketplace Newsextra, the woman’s usual lottery agency.

Still reeling from the instant win, the woman said she thought “it was a joke at first”.

“It’s so exciting,” she said. “I was at the local newsagency at Beenleigh Marketplace, and I thought I’d buy a couple of the Crossword scratchies because they’re my favourite.

“I just enjoy scratching them and I never expect to win anything big.”

She said she’d just sat down to enjoy her usual cuppa and scratchies when “lo and behold the $150, 000 came up”.

“I seriously thought someone was playing a trick on me and I nearly spilt my tea,” the woman said.

“I went straight back to the newsagency and the team member told me I’d have to claim it at The Lott head office. That’s when I knew it was real.”

Despite the big win, the woman said there had been no celebrations yet, allowing time to just “let it sink in”.

“I’d love to fix my car,” she said. “It has a few mechanical faults.

“But for now, I’ll sit on the win and process it all.”

Beenleigh Marketplace Newsextra team member Anita Gill said she was thrilled when she found out the newsagency had sold a top prize-winning entry.

“What an exciting milestone,” she said. “It’s our first major win since the new owners took over the outlet!”

In 2023, 144 Instant Scratch-Its top prize winners across The Lott’s jurisdictions collectively took home more than $12.1 million in top prizes.
