A Gold Coast school girl is being hailed a hero for steering a bus to safety after the driver suffered a medical episode.

The young 15-year-old student saw the driver lose consciousness and quickly took control of the wheel, steering the school bus, carrying 25 students, away from oncoming traffic on Southport Nerang Rd in Ashmore about 3.23pm on Monday.

The bus came to a stop on a median strip, with paramedics confirming no students on board were injured.
