A man has been arrested in Melbourne following a high-speed police chase that ended in a head-on collision between a black minivan and a silver taxi on Kingsway.

Commuters are facing major delays after a key road in Melbourne’s CBD was closed in both directions following a police pursuit involving a minivan allegedly carrying drugs.

Police noticed the minivan, which was of interest to police in relation to an ongoing investigation, travelling on Leakes Road in Truganina around 4am on Tuesday.

Officers covertly followed the vehicle along the West Gate Freeway before it exited at the Kings Way off-ramp and started travelling towards the city.

“Officers were able to successfully deploy vehicle immobilisation devices on Kings Way and the vehicle slowed but refused to pull over for police,” a statement from Victoria Police said.

A pursuit was called but quickly terminated when the van crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

The van then crashed into another car on the Kings Way Bridge head-on.

The minivan driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital under police guard. Two males in the other car also suffered injuries and were treated at the scene.

When police searched the van, they allegedly found a large quantity of drugs.

Kings Way has since reopened after being shut in both directions four hours.
