The driver of a ute that crashed into a house, killing three passengers and badly injuring two more, has been charged with three counts of manslaughter by WA Police.

The 22-year-old male was also charged with two counts of aggravated dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm following the horrific incident in Carlisle around 5.10am on Saturday.

Police said six people were inside the Holden Colorado ute when it veered off Orrong Road and hit a tree before crashing into the rear wall of a home backing onto Orrong Road, near the Roberts Road intersection.

Three men, aged 34, 22 and 22, who were all passengers, were critically injured and died at the scene.

Another two men, aged 23 and 19, were rushed to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries, where they remain fighting for their lives in intensive care.

Officers said the vehicle’s occupants had previously visited an entertainment precinct.

Road police Commander Mike Bell confirmed on Saturday that the young driver had blown over in an early breath test, but that police were awaiting blood test results to confirm.

The driver received only minor injuries and was quizzed by officers from the major crash investigation section before being charged. He was refused bail and is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday.

He said while it was early in the investigation, speed was clearly a factor in the horrific incident, as well as distraction from the five passengers in the ute.

Police also suspect some passengers were not wearing seatbelts, he said.
