Paul Thomas Anderson has been nominated for a lot of stuff before but hasn’t won all that much so it’s nice to see him finally get this victory lap this season.

In his speech, he called out two people, his assistant director Adam Sumner and Warner Bros executive Mike DeLuca.

On DeLuca, he said, “About 25 to 30 years ago, he came into my life, and he wanted to be my champion, and he’s single handedly supported me in the movies that I wanted to make.

“He said he had a dream of running a studio one day, and he was going to let directors do whatever the hell they wanted. So that’s how you get Sinners. That’s how you get Weapons. That’s how you get One Battle.”

Hey, look, Sinners is a great film but this is a pretty bizarre category, a consolation prize of sorts. But Sinners still remains in contention for one of the real best film gongs.

This is only the third time the Globes has awarded something for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which weirdly has a nominee that wasn’t even a cinematic release. Go figure.

But, yay for Sinners director Ryan Coogler. Legitimately, because he’s awesome.

Timothee Chalamet is storming through this awards season, taking out the Globe for his performance in Marty Supreme.

“To John Safdie, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for this role. Thank you for believing in me.

“My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up. Always be grateful for what you have. It’s allowed me to leave this ceremony in the past empty-handed, my head held high, grateful just to be here.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say those moments didn’t make this moment that much sweeter.”

He again thanked his partner, Kylie Jenner, but didn’t name her.

We’re not just being parochial here because Rose Byrne really was so gobsmackingly fantastic in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

Byrne was charm personified in her acceptance speech, “We shot this movie in 25 days for, like $8.50.

“Thank you so much. This is like a tiny film, so this is a good thing to be up here. And my brother’s my date. You know, my mum and dad, who bought Paramount Plus, so they could watch the Golden Globes.

“Thanks to my husband (Bobby Cannavale), he isn’t here because we’re getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey.”

This was a big moment for Byrne because the Oscar nominations voting opens tomorrow and the Academy membership was likely paying attention to that win.

Songwriter Ejae said, “As a little girl, I worked tirelessly for 10 years to fill one dream to become a KPop idol and I was rejected and disappointed that my voice wasn’t good enough.

“So I leaned on songs and music to get through it. So now I’m here as a singer and a songwriter. It’s a dream come true to be part of a song that is helping other girls, other boys, and everyone of all ages to get through their hardship and to accept themselves.”

She ended with a piece of advice, “rejection is redirection”.
