Neighbours has finished up for a second time after 41 seasons and 9363 episodes, with Thursday night’s finale leaving Ramsay Street, and its residents, in limbo.

It closes a 40-year chapter that launched stars like Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie, Holly Valance and Guy Pearce.

The storyline built to a climax with Ramsay Street facing developers and a freeway threat, pitting longtime residents against bold new visions for the suburb.

The episode opened with Susan Kennedy reflecting in her kitchen: “Is it really over? All the history, all the memories? Feels like deja vu…” Her husband Karl pushed forward: “We have to plan for our future.” “And you think that’s at Ramsay Hills?”

The soap, which ended in 2022 before a revival via Amazon Freevee, wrapped up amid a tense showdown between Shane Ramsay and Paul Robinson over rival housing developments, plus a looming freeway plan that threatened to wipe out the iconic suburb entirely.

Shane and his son Max rallied residents to their vision for a fresh community called Ramsay Hills, while Paul pushed his high-rise Robinson Towers project, both setups hinting at potential spin-offs.

In the closing scene, Susan Kennedy, Karl Kennedy, and Paul Robinson stood in their cul-de-sac as Susan declared her loyalty to the street.

“I want to stay. I want to fight for the street,” she said.

“Other communities have beaten the odds. We could be one of them. All day, I’ve had this sense we’ve been here before.

“Ramsay Hills looks wonderful....So does Robinson Towers. I can see them both in my mind’s eye. But I love Ramsay Street. I love our friends. I love our neighbours. And I don’t want to find a new perfect blend.

“I want to stay in this one.”

Paul sealed the moment with a lingering question: “So, what do we do?” Susan cheekily raised her eyebrows, sparking fan speculation online.

“Well it kinda ended but didn’t expecting some kind of spin off even if not set in Ramsay street in Robinsons Towers,” one Instagram user wrote.

“I feel it left it open just in case it resurrects again lol,” another said.

Executive producer Jason Herbison addressed the buzz in a post-finale letter to fans. “Why can’t the residents move somewhere else? They could – but we wouldn’t have a show, would we?” he said in his op-ed for TVTonight.

“Make that two new shows. In a way, ‘Robinson Towers’ and ‘Ramsay Hills’ are backdoor spin-off ideas.

“It would be fun to revisit the residents in fresh settings, perhaps as a shorter run or limited series.

“In production terms, it’s an opportunity to create a leaner model that isn’t shackled to a costly heritage site.

“Perhaps one or both shows will happen one day? Or perhaps they’ll be a return to Ramsay Street, if it’s still standing? Or another new chapter – Christmas movie, anyone?”

The revival followed Channel 5’s exit in 2022, but Amazon Freevee’s closure in September led to this year’s cancellation announcement.

Network 10, Fremantle and Amazon confirmed the end earlier this year.

“Unfortunately, after nearly four decades of events on Ramsay Street, production of Neighbours will cease this year,” a statement said at the time.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to this remarkable Australian story over the years, and we’re pleased to continue bringing you new episodes of Neighbours on Network 10 right through until December.”

One fan shared her dissapointment with the ending on TikTok saying: “I’ve watched from day 1 when I was 11. Thanks for all the memories. But should have left it at the last finale. Please don’t bring it back. So disappointed with the last ep. I expected to cry, like I have over the years. I didn’t cry. Goodbye Ramsay St”.
