A surprise speech from Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as emotional tributes to Joe Biden and an eviscerating speech from Hillary Clinton were the highlights from the opening of the four-day event.

Ashely Biden shares love for her dad Joe Biden
The First Daughter Ashley Biden has given a moving speech about her father calling Joe Biden the ‘OG girl dad’.
“He told me I could be anything,” she said.
Ashley spoke about how highly Joe Biden respects women.
The daughter reminded the President how he is the love of his family’s lives.
‘You will win’: The First Lady calls the election
“Joe and I know Kamala.
“We have seen her determination and her courage up close.
“Kamala and Tim, you will win.
“You are inspiring a new generation.
“We are all a part of something bigger than ourselves.
“The future of our country is in the hands of the people in this room and all of you watching at home.
“We can’t afford to lose.
“We will fight and we will win together.”
Short and sweet from the First Lady. Next up is the First Daughter Ashley Biden.
The First Lady on Joe Biden not seeking re-election
The first lady continued to speak about her admiration for her husband.
“Weeks ago, I saw him dig deep into his soul, and decide to no longer seek re-election and endorse Kamala Harris, with faith and conviction.” the First Lady said.
“Service to the communities that make us who we are.
“Love of our country that shines with promised and renewal.
“Kamala Harris knows that too,” Ms Biden said.
First Lady Dr Jill Biden addresses the Convention
The First Lady has stepped out onto the stage to chants of ‘Jill, Jill, Jill.” The DNC clearly love a good chant.
Dr Biden started with a tribute to her husband, sharing insight on the type of man and father he is.
“Joe and I have been together for almost 50 years,” she said.
“Still, there are moments when I fall in love with him all over again.
“Like when I handed him our baby Ashley for the first time and saw the smile that lit up his face.
“Or on nights after an exhausting day working in the Senate, he would read one more bedtime story just because the kids asked.”
Texas representative Jasmine Crockett compares Harris and Trump
With pizazz and comedic presentation, Texas representative Jasmine Crockett has taken the crowd through a table she made, comparing the two major party nominees.
“Kamala Harris has a resume,” she said.
“Donald Trump has a rap sheet.
“She resides over the Senate.
“While he keeps our national secrets next to his thinking chair in Maralagoo,” she said, showing an image of boxes of classified documents in Trump’s bathroom.
‘The Story of Donald Trump’
In what could be described as Democratic propaganda, like I would describe Republican propaganda for similar videos from the other party, Democrats were treated to a dramatic retelling of ‘The Story of Donald Trump.
“He lies, he rips off workers, he sexually abuses women,” a dramatically toned voice-over said accompanying a video of images and videos of Trump.
“He cheats in business.
“He cheated on his wife with a porn star and paid her off so the American people wouldn’t find out during an election.
“Guilty. Guilty. Guilty,” a selection of news audio clipped together said.
“For the first time in history we have a convicted felon running for president, and to take on this case we need a president who has spent her life prosecuting criminals like Donald Trump.
“If elected, Trump has promised to overturn laws that would keep him accountable, and exact retribution on anything he sees as an enemy.
“Even warning of a blood bath if he doesn’t get his way,” the voice-over said with even more dramatic inflection.
“So we the people have the chance to render our own verdict on Donald Trump.
“We are the jury he most fears.”
The video felt more dramatic than a Home & Away series finale promo, and the 4,000+ crowd of Democrats absolutely LOVED it.
Clinton’s done. What next?
After a hard-and-fast hour and a bit, including a surprise Harris speech, AOC sharing her powerful story and Hilary Clinton taking a moment to get a few Trump digs in whilst advocating for Harris, things will will here from a few other US democrats before we pick up again.
The big names still to come include First Lady Dr Jill Biden and US President Joe Biden.
They are expected to speak very shortly so stay tuned.
Clinton’s emotional wrap-up
Clinton’s passion was clear in her final powerful remarks as she appeared close to tears.
“I want my grandchildren and their grandchildren to know I was here at that moment,” she said.
“To know we were here and that we were with Kamala Harris every step of the way.
“This is our time America. This is when we stand up. This is when we break through.
“The future is here, it’s in our grasp.
“Let go win it!”
Clinton waved farewell to the song as Fight Song by Rachel Platten played.
Clinton on the ‘glass ceiling’
“I see freedom from fear and intimidation from violence and injustice.
“I see the freedom to look at our children in the eye and say in America you can go as far as your hard work and talent will take you, and mean it.
“And you know what, on the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States.
“When a barrier falls for one of us, it falls for all of us.”
Not surprisingly, it appears Clinton still really dislikes Trump
Hillary Clinton has really taken her opportunity to stick the boot in and talk Trump down.
“I know what it takes, and I can tell you as commander in chief Kamala won’t disrespect our military and veterans,” she said.
“She won’t be sending love letters to dictators.
“She will defend democracy and our constitution and will protect America from enemies foreign and domestic.
“Kamala cared about America.
“Donald only cares about himself.”
