Harris shocks with surprise day one appearance
‘Lock him up’ chants as Clinton attacks Trump
“As a prosecutor, Kamala locked up murdered and drug traffickers,” Clinton said.
“She will never rest in defence of our freedom and safety.
“Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial.
“When he woke up he made his own kind of history, the first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions.
The crowd, of Democrat voters, took to their feet again chanting ‘Lock him up’ as Clinton smiled with what appeared to be a glimmer of joy and a sense of pay-back.
Abortion rights to be restored nationwide
One of the hottest topics of most elections in the US is abortion rights.
Laws were recently tightened making abortions illegal in some US states.
“Kamala has the character, experience and vision to lead us forward,” Clinton said.
“I know her heart and her integrity.
“As President, she will have our backs. She will be a fire for us.
“And yes, she will restore abortion rights nationwide.”
Women in the audience could be seen tearful over the promise to restore their rights.
Clinton urges Harris and the Democrats to ‘keep going’
“I wish my mother and Kamala’s mother could see us,” Clinton said.
“They would say keep going
“Women fighting for women’s reproductive health care are saying keep going.”
Clinton went on to say young people struggling to pay rent and families struggling to pay childcare or get by, were also saying ‘keep going’.
“So with faith in each other and joy in our hearts, let’s send Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to The White House.”
Clinton talks about 2016 election
Hillary Clinton has spoken about the 2016 election, where she ran against Donald Trump, losing in a very close count.
“In 2016, It was the honour of my life to accept our party’s nomination for president.”
“Nearly 66 million Americans voted for a future where there are no ceilings on our dreams
“Afterwards, we refused to give up on America. Millions marched, and many ran for office.
“We kept our eyes on the future.
“Well, my friends, the future is here,” Clinton said sending the Democrat crowd wild.
A new chapter in America’s story
Clinton has reminded the DNC that women were only given the equal opportunity to vote in the United States 104 years ago.
“This is a new chapter in America’s story,” Clinton said.
“My mother Dorothy was born right here in Chicago before women had the right to vote.
“That changed 104 years ago yesterday.”
“In 1984, I brought my daughter to see Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to be nominated as vice president.
“’If we can do this’, Gerry said, ‘we can do anything’,” Clinton recalled.
Hillary Clinton takes swipe at Trump while thanking Biden
“Let’s salute President Biden,” Clinton said as the audience rose to their feet again after not sitting for even a minute since the last standing ovation.
“He has been democracy’s champion at home and abroad.
“He brought dignity, decency and competence back to The White House,” Clinton said, appearing to take a dig at Donald Trump who was US President before Biden took office.
“He showed what it means to be a true patriot.
“Thank you Joe Biden for your lifetime of service and leadership.”
Hillary Clinton welcomed with a standing ovation
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took to the stage thanking her fellow democrats and Americans for an almost minute-long standing ovation.
“There’s a lot of energy in this room, just like there is across the country,” Clinton cheered.
“Something is happening in America, you can feel it
“Something we have worked for and dreamed of for a long time.”
Clinton ran for president in 2016 and lost to the Republican candidate, now former President Donald Trump.
AOC shares her story
AOC has garnered a cult-level following since joining politics and is widely revered as a politician of the people.
Speaking to the crowd, Cortez shared her journey from waitress to representative.
“Six years ago, I was taking omelette orders as a waitress,” she said.
“I didn’t have health insurance. My family were fighting off foreclosure and we were struggling with bills after my dad passed away unexpectedly from cancer.
“Like millions of Americans we were just looking for an honest shake and we were tired of a cynical politics that seemed blind to the realities of working people.
“It was then, only through the miracles of democracy and community that the good people of the Bronx and Queens chose someone like me to elect them in Congress.
“America, in my heart, I know from that same cloth of aspiration, we will elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz as President and vice president of the United States of America.”
AOC takes to the stage
New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC as she is more commonly known, took to the stage to chants of “A-O-C, A-O-C” from the excited Democratic crowd.
“Thank you, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, for your vision,” she said, before having to repeat herself over the growing chants.
“Thank you, Joe Biden, for your leadership.”
Thanking President Biden looks like it will be the major theme of day one, as Democrats balance staying loyal to the current President while embracing the idea of a fresh start with Harris.
‘When we fight, we win,’ says Harris
Harris finished her surprise day one speech, which was not on any schedule, by advocating for the party to unite, come together, and win.
“Looking out at everyone tonight, I see the beauty of our great nation,” Harris said.
“People from every corner of our country, and every walk of life are here. United by our shared vision for the future of our country.
“This November we will come together and declare with one voice, as one people we are moving forward.”
“With optimism, hope and faith, so guided by our love of country knowing we all have so much more in common than what separates us.
“Let us fight for the ideals we hold dead.”
“Let us always always remember, when we fight, we win.”
