AFL live scores: West Coast Eagles smashed by 101 points against St Kilda

West Coast have made a horror start in their attempt to snap a three-match losing run - and they haven’t been helped by the AFL’s score review system. Follow all the action from Marvel Stadium here!

AFL: West Coast failed to fire a meaningful shot as they were hammered to the tune of 101 points by St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

The Eagles entered the match off a string of losses against three genuine premiership contenders in Sydney, Geelong and Fremantle, and the task didn’t get significantly easier against a Saints side that returned to their Marvel Stadium home for just the second time this season.

Recap all the action from our blog below.

Why!?

Yeo has blown the easiest of goal chances.

He gets the mark 12 metres out from goal on a minor angle but for some reason plays on and hits the belly of the ball and misses.

Would have given the visitors the first of the term and cut the margin to 13.

A goalless first term doesn’t truly reflect the Eagles’ quarter but at the end of the day, you can’t expect better when constantly making the same mistakes.

Maric is a welcome return and Duursma started very brightly having been given the NAS match-up.

Reid has barely been in the game and Yeo is getting the ball while constatly surrounded.

Both teams are clogging the contests because they know the team that gets to the outside will carve up.

Lucky

Ryan misses a set shot after West Coast got a nice clearance just outside attacking 50 and then went all the way back with dicey handballs instead of pumping the ball deep.

The Eagles are well in this contest and the early match-ups suggest they can at worst keep things tight.

However, they need some early reward for the hardwork to keep their heads up and mindset positive.

Otherwise, this will be another poor road defeat.

Ryan up and about

Liam Ryan has his first goal against his former club and it all comes as Kelly let Windhager run away from him at halfback without following.

Young got hands to the kick inside 50 but it went out the back and no one was stopping Ryan.

Wrong entry!

West Coast are missing the mark heading inside 50.

Their pressure on the Saints is good and their defence looks to have a good match with the Saints today.

However, their kicks inside 50 have not even come close to finding a target.

Both Waterman and Shanahan are up there and they’ve been completly missed with Howard and Wilkie cleaning up for the home side.

Underway

Williams wins the first tap to Harley Reid but he gets tackled and his handball intercepted.

Duursma runs with Wanganeen-Malera to start and the young Eagle does a good job but hurts his finger in the process.

Moving tribute

The closed Marvel Stadium roof has given the ceremony the ambience it deserved as flames crackled behind both teams.

Liam Baker then wins the toss and we are ready to get underway!

Almost ready to go

Both teams are out on the field and we’re about to go through the pre-game ceremony for this Anzac appeal round.

The Eagles are wearing a striking Anzac strip, with golden wattles in place of the usual yellow wings on the jumpers. Looks fantastic.

Liam love

It’s all love between Liam Ryan and the Eagles today!

Ryan today becomes the 11th Eagles premiership player to face his old side this century. The previous 10 have all won in their first clash against West Coast...

Starts and finishes

Imperative to West Coast being competitive today is finding a way to start - and finish - the game better.

The Eagles have lost every one of their first and last quarters this season. They’re just the third team in AFL/VFL history to suffer that fate through the opening six games of a campaign, joining Richmond’s 1993 team and St Kilda’s 1897 unit from the league’s inaugural season.
