Mitchell Starc takes a spectacular catch off his own bowling to dismiss Crawley for a duck in the Ashes series.

Cricket: The first day of The Ashes at Optus Stadium somehow managed to live up to all the hype, with 19 wickets falling in a frantic opening to the series.

Australia looked well on top after bowling England out inside 33 overs for just 172 on the back of Mitchell Starc’s career-best seven-wicket haul.

But the visitors hit back in fine style, exploiting fast and bouncy conditions to reduce the home side to 9-123 in response as captain Ben Stokes led the way with five wickets of his own.

After a bundle of wickets fell on Day 1, what will the weekend bring?

Stay across the latest Ashes action as Australia and England resume their battle at Optus Stadium.

Trent’s take on Boland

Channel 7 analyst Trent Copeland takes a look at how Scott Boland adjusted following a difficult first day of the Ashes.

Ben Duckett’s wicket was just reward for the Victorian, who bowled a superb spell before lunch.

Root off the mark

Joe Root may have been nervous after a first-innings duck but did not show it, with the second-leading run-scorer in the history of Test cricket flicking the first ball he faced off Boland down to fine leg to get off his pair and open his account for the series.

Could this be the innings where he posts his first century on Australian shores?

Boland breaks through!

Scott Boland has finally broken through for his first wicket of the summer, bagging a breakthrough Australia desperately needed.

With his second ball of the session, the Victorian was able to get Ben Duckett fencing outside of his body, drawing an edge which Steve Smith was all too happy to claim at second slip.

Duckett, who made 28 from 40 balls, hung around to ensure the catch was clean but quickly made his way off after taking one look at the replay.

Duckett bruised but unbeaten as lunch called

Australia looked to have a wicket on the eve of lunch but Ben Duckett’s review after being given out LBW off Scott Boland proved successful, with the ball shown to be pitching outside leg stump.

The home side were able to build the pressure as the break approached, conceding only 10 runs from the final five overs of the first session.

Duckett looked to break the shackles by running down the wicket at Scott Boland in a move which proved ill-advised, with Boland’s delivery rearing off a length to hammer into his forearm.

Only one ball later, he was pinned on the pads by Boland, but the England batter was able to earn a reprieve.

England on top

England are well on top in this Test match, with their lead now nearing 100 on the back of a flourishing 54-run second-wicket stand between Ben Duckett (24 not out) and Ollie Pope (23 not out).

The pair have rebuilt well since the early departure of Zak Crawley, going along at a run rate above four per over.

Australia desperately need a breakthrough before lunch, which is around 15 minutes away.

Aussies under pressure

Australia have produced some sloppy moments in the field, with overthrows taken from the first two balls of Brendan Doggett’s second over.

Jake Weatherald’s wild attempt to run out Ollie Pope after the second ball rocketed to the fence, but it at least did not cost the bowler’s figures, going down as five leg byes.

Doggett gave away 27 runs in his seven first-innings overs but England are not letting him settle here, already notching 14 from his first two today.

England building

After losing an early wicket, England are now building on their 40-run first innings lead in good time.

No.3 Ollie Pope has made his way to 18 from only 25 deliveries, while Duckett (17 from 18 balls) has been starved of the strike of late.
