Cricket: Ben Stokes did his best to hold England together, but Australia were far too good on a day that all but wraps up the Ashes as a contest.

England were bowled out for 286 before Travis Head hit his fourth Test century at the Adelaide Oval in his past four matches there.

Alex Carey also added another handy knock.

Recap the day in our blog below.

Mr Adelaide!

Head does it again!

He has two Test hundreds as an opener in just five attempts and makes it four Test hundreds at Adelaide Oval in his past four Adelaide Tests.

Root made him wait with darts and then he got dropped by Brook at backward point off Archer on 99 cutting.

He finally got there in Root’s next over with a smash over mid-off for four.

The superstar kissed the pitch in celebration!

Review

Starc goes full and straight to Tongue and raps him on the pads.

He loves it but the umpire says no.

Starc send it straight upstairs but ball tracking remains umpires call with nearly half the ball hitting leg stump.

Got him again!

It’s a repeat of the Perth dismissal for Stokes.

Starc decks one back into the English skipper and it crashes into off stump.

Stokes is furious but there was not much he could have done about that. Out for 83.

Jofra’s match

Archer adds a maiden Test half century to his five wickets and it’s been quite the match for the quick.

It will also do his relaitionship with the skipper a world of good after a frosty encounter yesterday.

100 partnership

Stokes gets cut in half by Cummins second ball but an inside edge races to the fine leg rope for four.

Stones on to 80 as these two bring up the 100 partnership for just the second time in the series.

Some swing

Starc got one scramble-seam delivery to swing miles and it just missed Archer’s off stump.

However, the new pill isn’t doing much.

That one ball has Archer prodding again though.

New ball

Australia have warmed up Mitchell Starc and taken the new ball!

Carey beaten

There’s finally a ball Carey can’t keep to!

Lyon gets perfect flight and revs and the ball rips off the deck, through the gate of Archer and past Carey who had zero chance of laying a glove on it.

Stokes scrambles three with great running.

Cash in

Australia are five overs away from the new ball and England will be hoping to cash in before it arrives.

Green is on bowling some chin music at Archer but the ball is soft and doing nothing.

Not much could happen for the home side until the new ball.

Career high

For the second Test in a row Archer has notched a career-high score.

He slogs a single down to deep mid-on off Lyon, who is bowling beautifully, to get to 39.

Half century

Stokes notches 50 and it’s the slowest half century of his career and the slowest since his Headingley miracle in 2019.

Comes from 159 deliveries.
