Early contender for picture of the Games
What a treat to have Spain’s tennis master and apprentice - champions Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz - playing alongside each other.
They were made to work by their Argentinean opponents, but are through to the second round with a 7-6, 6-4 first-up win.
Anyone know if these guys are any good on the clay?

Titmus waves to the crowd as she gets her gold medal placed around her neck on the podium. What a triumph!
That win and Grace Brown’s victory earlier in the day on the bike has Australia sitting on top of the medal tally in the very early stages of these Games.
And they’ll have a chance to add to that tally in the next few minutes, starting firm favourites in the 4x100m freestyle medley!
Titmus talks
“It’s a big monkey on your back... I actually felt it this week,” Ariarne Titmus says after her gold medal triumph.
“I’ll forever be a back-to-back Olympic champion, which is pretty cool... I’m just a kid from Tassie.”
Here’s the wrap of Titmus’ epic win and her place in history.
Men’s 100m breaststroke semifinals
There’s no joy for Aussie Josh Yong, who finishes sixth and won’t qualify for the final in the first semi.
Stingers prevail
Amid the excitement of Titmus’ win - and we’ll hear from her presently - the Aussie Stingers got the job done in the water polo arena.
It was locked at 5-5 entering the final minutes, but two late goals sealed a 7-5 first-up win for our water polo women.
TITMUS... GOLD FOR AUSTRALIA!
Ariarne Titmus gets it done!
A dominant race in the 400m free... leaving all in her wake!
She pumps her fist and looks both joyous and relieved. That’s a big one, and it was a beatifully executed one as she held off Canada’s Summer McIntosh and comfortably got past Ledecky, who held on for the bronze.
Titmus v Ledecky
After that silver... can Ariarne Titmus go one better?
It’s time for the big showdown, and one of the most anticipated rivalries of this Olympics. Our Aussie v US star Katie Ledecky. Who gets it done?
SILVER FOR AUSTRALIA!
Elijah Winnington gets silver in the men’s 400 free!
Germany’s Lukas Maertens leads from start to finish and holds on in the final 50m, with Winnington coming home really strong to claim second. Fellow Aussie Sam Short also just missed out on bronze.
McKeon qualifies
Emma McKeon faded a fraction late, but has done enough to qualify for the women’s 100m butterfly.
She’s sixth fastest for tomorrow’s final, but faces a tough prospect to improve enough to challenge Gretchen Walsh on the evidence of those semifinals.
Next up in the pool: The final of the men’s 400m freestyle, with Elijah Winnington in lane 6 and Sam Short in lane 2 looking to challenge the favourite in Germany’s Lukas Maertens.
