Iran carried out attacks on Australian soil in 2024: Wong
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said Iran had been a destabilising force in the region for decades and had orchestrated attacks on Australia.
Iran directed least two attacks on Australian soil in 2024, Ms Wong said, describing them as “appalling acts targeting Australia’s Jewish community”.
”They were acts that were intended to create fear, to divide our society and to challenge our sovereignty.
“In response Australia took the unprecedented step of expelling Iran’s ambassador. We suspended operations at our embassy in Tehran. We listed the IRGC as asponsor of terrorism.
“The Albanese government has taken stronger action against Iran than any Australian government. We sanctioned more than 200 individuals including 100 the IRGC.”
She said her thoughts were with the Australian-Iranian community and that it was a “distressing time”.
“Australia reiterates the Iranian people must be allowed to determine their own future for their country.”
Travel advice upgraded for Australians
Penny Wong said the National Security Council and the Cabinet had met and Australian officials were closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East.
“Given the concerns around security (we have) upgraded our travel advice to ‘do not travel’ for Israel, Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
“We also call on Iran to cease its indiscriminate countries in the region, many which not party to this conflict.,” Ms Wong said.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs is urgently seeking to confirm whether any Australians have been affected. We have activated our crisis (lines) to provide consular support to Australians in the region and this morning we are opening our registration portal in Iran and Israel.”
Penny Wong says Australia stands with ‘great struggle against oppression’
Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong is addressing the media, saying “Australia stands with the great struggle against oppression”.
“For decades we know the Iranian regime has been a destabilising force through its ballistic nuclear programs, support for armed proxies and brutal acts of violence and intimidation.
“We have seen a brutal crackdown, killing thousands of its own citizens and you heard me say, that a regime that requires the murder of its own people to maintain authority is a regime without legitimacy.
“The international community is clear: this regime can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, so, Australia supports action to prevent Iran from nuclear weapons and to prevent them from continuing to threaten international peace.
She said while Australia did participate in the strikes on Iran we were in contact with our partners.
“We do not want to see this escalate and urge the protection life and, as others have, we seek the resumption of dialogue and diplomacy.’
