Austral: Police dog used to chase down teenager after alleged vandalism rampage in western Sydney

A teenager has led police on a chase to avoid arrest that allegedly led to an officer being injured and a police dog being deployed to bring him down.

The offender has been charged after allegedly damaging property and assaulting police in Sydney’s south west on Sunday morning.

At about 2am, officers attached to Camden police area command were called to Leppington train station, following reports a person was allegedly seen smashing the window of two parked cars.

Following inquiries, police located a 16-year-old boy on Edmondson Avenue, Austral.

Police attempted to speak with the boy before he ran from the scene, jumping a fence into a nearby property on Edmondson Avenue, Austral.

A perimeter was established and with the assistance of the dog unit, the boy was located on the roof of the property.

The boy allegedly jumped from the rooftop before being bitten by the police dog, then allegedly continued to evade police by scaling a fence and entering a building.

He was arrested a short time later inside the building.

He was treated at the scene for an injury to his leg before being taken to Narellan Police Station.

Upon arrival, he was further assessed by paramedics and taken to hospital where he remained under hospital guard.

A senior constable attached to the dog unit was injured as he attempted to arrest the boy. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a serious arm injury and taken to hospital for further treatment.

The boy was released from hospital on Sunday afternoon and taken back to Narellan Police Station.

He was charged with two counts destroy or damage property less than or equal to $2000, Assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, escape police custody, enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear before Children’s Court on Monday.
