Detectives are investigating two violent incidents in Coffs Harbour this morning — a house fire and a serious assault — which police believe are connected.

Emergency crews were first called to Wongala Drive about 5.30am on Sunday after reports of a blaze.

Officers from the Coffs/Clarence Police District arrived to find a home engulfed in flames.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews managed to bring the fire under control.

A 41-year-old woman escaped the property with minor injuries. She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital for further care.

A crime scene was immediately established, with specialist officers carrying out forensic examinations.

Less than half an hour later, police were called to Raymond Street following reports of a violent assault.

When they arrived, officers discovered a man and woman in their 60s with serious head injuries.

Both victims were stabilised by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Police have confirmed the two incidents are linked. At around 8am, a 28-year-old man, known to the assault victims, attended Coffs Harbour Police Station, where he remains as investigations continue.

Detectives have established separate crime scenes and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
