A harrowing scene has played out after a family’s pet dog viciously mauled a teenage visitor to their house, leaving her in a critical condition.

The 16-year-old girl had called in to visit her friend at the residence on Thursday morning, when the 10-year-old family pet launched an attack, biting and tearing at her head, neck and torso.

Emergency services arrived at the Broughton Street house in Singleton at around 11.30am, and found the girl with critical injuries.

According to reports, passers-by intervened and were able to get the dog off the girl before calling for assistance.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being emergency airlifted to John Hunter Hospital for surgery.

Police, who described the dog as being “large” and “of mixed breed”, destroyed the animal at the scene with assistance from Singleton Council Rangers and with the consent of the owner.
