Cricket: Australia’s bowlers bounced back from an embarrassing defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin by knocking over the tourists for 64 at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena, but their batters produced another misfire.

Amazingly, 18 wickets fell on the first day of the game, with the hosts managing to take a lead of 101 into the close.

Recap all the action here!

Australia closing in

Australia are not relenting, with Pat Cummins working over Bangladesh’s No.8 Hasan Mahmud in the game’s 18th over.

Mahmud was able to frustrate Australia in Darwin, but the situation is very different here.

BAN 6-27

Brilliant by Cummins!

Pat Cummins is now in on the act for Australia!

The captain has breached the defences of Mushfiqur Rahim with a delivery which jagged back considerably after hitting the seam.

Bangladesh’s tail-end will now have to take on the task of getting them towards a respectable score.

BAN 6-21

Bangladesh settling

After the most frantic of starts to this game, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz are trying to settle Bangladesh here.

The pair are both five not out and have combined to soak up 66 deliveries.

BAN 5-21

Webster introduced

One of Australia’s twin all-rounders Beau Webster came close to picking up a wicket in his first over.

At the last possible moment, Pat Cummins called for a review of a delivery which brushed very close to Mushfiqur Rahim’s bat, but edge detection technology showed no spike.

BAN 5-20

Mehidy’s big job

Bangladesh’s No.7 Mehidy Hasan Miraz compiled an impressive 65 when his team was bossing the game in Darwin, but he has entered a very different set of circumstances here.

Alongside Mushfiqur Rahim, the all-rounder will be crucial if his side is to post any sort of score of note.

BAN 5-17

Drinks in Mackay

Drinks are coming onto the field in Mackay - but Australia have already had the chance to have plenty, having claimed five Bangladesh wickets in the first hour of this game.

Mitchell Starc has been the chief destroyer, with the left-armer boasting barely-believable figures of 5-5 from his six overs.

BAN 5-15

Starc searching for six

It took until Mitchell Starc’s fifth over for him to send one down without claiming a wicket.

He was not far away from grabbing his sixth with the last ball, only for a Mushfiqur Rahim inside edge to get past his stumps.

BAN 5-13

The numbers to beat

Bangladesh’s lowest score in their Test history is 43, which they were bowled out for by West Indies in 2018.

In Australia, no team has gone below the 36 India posted in their second innings in Adelaide in 2020.

The lowest team total ever in the history of the format is the 26 New Zealand were rolled for by England in 1955 - a mark Australia came ever so close to beating when they routed West Indies for 27 in Kingston last year.

BAN 5-12

Webster drops a sitter, but Das goes!

Beau Webster has droped an absolute sitter which would have given Mitchell Starc his fifth wicket!

Litton Das reared at a short ball and it went straight to the Tasmanian all-rounder at third slip, who somehow managed to shell the chance.

Thankfully, it didn’t cost him much. Starc trapped the Bangladesh wicketkeeper lbw with his very next delivery, courtesy of a successful review.

BAN 5-12

Starc’s first-ball record

Mitchell Starc claiming the wicket of Shadman Islam was the fourth time he has made a breakthrough with the very first ball of a Test match.

He is now the sole owner of that record, having gone past former West Indies seamer Pedro Collins.
