REVIEW: England survive
Australia lose a review as a Starc shout for LBW shows the ball to marginally be going over the top of middle stump.
Carse lives to fight another day, and then follows up with a superb drive through the covers.
He pushes England’s total along to 7-297. 138 required for victory...
England 7-289
Well, the mood has changed considerably with that last wicket. What a steadier for Australia. What a killer for England.
The tourists had done such a good job in the morning session, and were aided by a 40-minute rain delay and the injury that’s set to keep Nathan Lyon out of the attack for today - and potentially the rest of the series, depending on the severity.
But the Smith dismissal opens the door to the tail. Brydon Carse has joined Will Jacks (31no), but there’s still 146 required for the remarkable England win.
Starc - who’s Player of the Series right now by a fair margin - picked up just his second wicket of the match in a timely fashion. Cummins has looked OK body-wise in his two overs with the new ball.
Lunch has been pushed back a touch following the earlier rain delay.
Smith OUT!
Starc breaks through!
Smith had belted four successive boundaries... but once again, there’s a soft dismissal from a loose shot.
He tries to pull Starc over cow corner or deep square, but spoons one to Cummins at wide mid-on. That is a MASSIVE moment just minutes before the lunch break!
Smith goes for a well-made 60, and it gave the Poms some hope, but it’s just another example of poor batting for the tour. “Dopey, dopey, dopey” laments Ricky Ponting on Seven.
England 6-276
50 up for Jamie Smith!
He punts Cummins down the ground over mid-off to bring up his first half-century of the tour.
Cummins appeared fine physically, but leaked a pair of boundaries as England continue to gain hope here.
There’s seven minutes left until the lunch break. Can the Aussies break through?
Cummins good to go!
It’s Pat Cummins to share the new ball!
The skipper hasn’t bowled since the 33rd over of the innings, but now returns for over No.82. Let’s see how he looks.
England are 6-268, needing another 167 to win from here...
NEW BALL: England 6-267
After Smith blasts Head for successive boundaries, it’s time for the second new ball.
No surprise that Mitchell Starc has his hands on it from one end, but who takes it at the other is looming as a big story.
Ponting on Australia’s attack
Here’s Ricky Ponting summing up the concerns of plenty of fans watching on:
“There could be all sorts of ramifications here for Australia. If Lyon can’t bowl, Pat Cummins hasn’t bowled this morning, there’s some worries around him and his fitness and Mitchell Starc is on two warnings for running on the track. Travis Head’s going to bowl this over and he might have to do a bit more bowling now as this day goes on.”

Lyon injured!
There’s serious concerns for Nathan Lyon here, after appearing to injure himself while diving in the field.
Lyon grabbed at his right hamstring and has limped off immediately.
Travis Head has replaced him as the new ball beckons in two overs, but this is a big story developing - particularly if Cummins is also not right to bowl this afternoon...
England 6-246
The partnership is up to 52!
It’s just the 11th time this series that England have managed a stand in excess of 50 - and only four of those have gone north of 70.
England 6-243
Five overs remain until the new ball.
The Lyon-Green bowling partnership continues, having been unchanged since the first ball of the day.
