Cricket: Day 1 in Adelaide had no shortage of talking points - so what will Day 2 bring?

Australia resume at 8-326, but it could have been a better position for England had a DRS error not gone against them to help Alex Carey notch a ton.

The tourists will be looking to wrap up two quick wickets and then bat for a long chunk of time - in forecast 37C heat - to put the pressure back on the home side.

Relive the day in our blog below!

BOLAND STRIKES AGAIN! CARSE GOES!

Bowled him!

Boland gets a second within the space of 10 minutes, as Carse has no answer for one that moves in to him and clips the top of middle and off.

It’s now 8-168, with England still 203 in arrears. Archer is at the crease and suddenly it looms as time for Stokes to hit out unless he wants to be stranded...

Alexander the Great

Mitchell Starc is in seat 1A for Player of the Series, but Alex Carey has a case for being the man closest to him.

17 dismissals with the gloves amid some of the best wicketkeeping you’ll see, as well as leading the series averages with the bat with 65. He’s been tremendous.

OUT! JACKS GOES!

Scott Boland strikes!

He’s been keeping it super tight, and you can’t keep him out of the action - nor Alex Carey.

The keeper is standing up to the stumps as Jacks edges one onto the top of his leg, and Carey is there with quick reflexes to dive forward and to his right to pouch it!

Jacks goes for 6, and it’s now 7-168, with England officially in trouble.

Ponting on Smith’s divisive dismissal

Here’s Ricky Ponting speaking on Seven about the Smith dismissal:

“There is a gap between frames, which has been spoken about a lot. If you watch that again, you’ll see the vision here... That is in between frames. In between one frame and then you don’t see where the ball passes past the bottom of the bat because it is one frame before and the next one you see is one frame after. It doesn’t capture the bit in the middle. The other confusing thing with it is where the noise actually appears. What the technology is saying is if it is anywhere within one frame, if the audio matches up within one frame, then that is what they are going off.”

England 5-167

Jacks peels off a crisp boundary against Lyon, bashing one through the covers.

He’s moved to 6 and will no doubt be buoyed by memories of his solid partnership with Stokes in Brisbane that kept the Aussies at bay for more than a session on Day 4.

DROPPED!

It’s a tough chance... but Travis Head puts it down!

Jacks prods forward off Lyon, squeezes it just to the left of short leg... and Head gets a hand to it but it fails to stick.

That would have left England in all sorts. The tourists desperately need to find a substantial partnership here, as drinks are called onto the field.

England 6-160

Amid the drama, the unassuming Scott Boland is back into the attack and is bang-on to begin with a maiden.

Not for the first time, so much rests on the shoulders of Ben Stokes now. He’s 28no, and has just Will Jacks for support before the 9-10-Jack of Carse / Archer / Tongue. England are still 211 behind.

SMITH IS GONE, AND THERE’S MORE SNICKO DRAMA!

Short and it stays a touch low and catches the under edge and the umpire is checking if it’s carried.

No dramas over the catch this time, but snicko isn’t quite lining up and it looks like there’s a gap.

But on the field decision was he hit it, and Smith is filthy as he walks off.

Never looked comfortable mind but that’ll go down like a bag of sick with England fans.

45th Over - ENG 5-159

BANG! On a length and Smith swings across the line to find the midwicket boundary.

Goes again but it pops up off a deflection and nearly falls back on his own stumps.

Men back now, and Smith shows smarts to drop and run a single.

FOUR! Width on offer and Stokes nails the drive through extra cover

44th Over - ENG 5-150

Cummins keeps short, and Smith nails another pull, but Marnus pulls off a terrific save to keep it to one.

England get to 150
