Paris Olympics 2024: Live blog of day five of Games action as triathlon action gets underway

The West Australian
An Australian surfer has been rescued from drowning in ‘dangerous and crazy’ Olympics surfing storm.

It’s day five of the Paris Olympic Games and athletes are braving the river Seine as the first triathlons get underway.

Follow all the action in our live blog.

That’s it from us!

What a day that was for Australia!

We didn’t have much luck in the pool, but Kyle Chalmers and Zac Stubblety-Cook will bring home silver medals to be proud of.

The Matildas too had a tough night, bundled out of the Olympics at the group stage, and the fallout to that will be immense.

But Natalya Diem claimed a bronze in the women’s freestyle BMX, a remarkable story after recovering from five ACL injuries, as did Penny Smith, who only just slipped into the final but then claimed bronze in the women’s trap shooting.

And Jess Fox rubber-stamped her position as the greatest-ever paddler, winning a second gold at these games and a third all up in a stunning run to claim the women’s C1 slalom.

Thanks for joining us and keep it locked to thewest.com.au for all the fallout.

All over for the Matildas

Canada has defeated Colombia 1-0, which means they move to three points and are the strongest third-placed finisher across the pools.

Brazil are the second-best third-placed team, which means the Matildas are out of the Olympic football tournament.

There will be massive fallout to this one, with the World Cup fourth-place finishers conceding 10 goals in three games.

Kyle to keep going

Kyle Chalmers has brushed aside claims he will retire after these Olympics, telling the Australian broacaster he will not be hanging up the goggles anytime soon.

Exciting stuff after another strong swim!

And that’s it from the pool!

It’s been a night of almosts. Mollie O’Callaghan and Shayna Jack both missed the medals where they were tipped to do well in the 100m freestyle, then Zac Stubblety-Cook and Kyle Chalmers won silvers in the final events of the night - both in epic races.

It’s our first night in the pool these Games without a gold medal.

But some results to be proud of from our Aussies!

Chalmers silver

WOW! An epic swim from Pan Zhanle wins the gold, leading from start to finish.

Kyle Chalmers wins silver for the second Olympics in a row in what he believed would be his last Games.

Zhanle also claims a world record - the first we have seen in the pool this meet.

That’s gold, silver, silver, for Kyle across the past three Games.

It’s Kyle’s time

Kyle Chalmers’ bid to win back the men’s 100m freestyle he claimed silver in at Tokyo is almost here.

It’s a STACKED field that includes Jack Alexy, David Popovinci and Pan Zhanle.

French champ does it again

With the roars of the home crowd greeting every head bob, Leon Marchand has won his third gold, pinching 200m breaststroke glory off Zac Stubblety-Cook.

The Queenslander set himself up for a trademark surge home, but just left too much to do and finishes with a very good silver.

Marchand has been the hero of these Olympics and the response has been remarkable.

It’s a new Olympic record and it is the closest we have seen a swimmer to the world record line all week so far.

West Australian Josh Yong finished eighth in his Olympic debut.

Next up

Now it’s time for Zac Stubblety-Cook, who is already an Olympic gold medallist from his debut Games in Tokyo.

But he is swimming against a nation. His rival in this 200m breastroke final is Leon Marchand, the Frenchman who has taken over these games with blistering swims and is the overwhelming Parisian favourite.

Stubbblety-Cook left it very late in both his heat and his semifinal, so expect him to sit in the field and try and mount a late charge.

Straight after that we have Kyle Chalmers in the final of the men’s 100m, an event he won eight years ago in Rio.

Tillies trouble

Canada has just scored in their match with Colombia to go 1-0 ahead.

It means that on the live table, the Matildas will not make it through to the quarter-final and that final spot will go to the Canadians.

It comes after they had six points stripped of them for flying drones above a New Zealand training camp earlier this week.

Tough break for our girls

Ella Ramsey and Jenna Strauch have both missed out on the final of the 200m breaststroke after a rapid second semifinal bundled them out.
