Paris Olympics 2024: Live blog of day five of Games action as triathlon action gets underway
It’s day five of the Paris Olympic Games and athletes are braving the river Seine as the first triathlons get underway.
Follow all the action in our live blog.
Nervous waits
Both Jenna Strauch and Ella Ramsey face nervous waits after their 200m breaststroke semifinal.
Strauch finished fifth and Ramsey sixth with another semi, tipped to be stronger, to come in a moment’s time.
Dream team flying
The US were given a decent push by South Sudan in a warm-up match and had to be pulled out of trouble by LeBron James just last week.
But they’re taking care of business here. Bam Adebayo has 14 points and is perfect from the field with a 55-36 lead at the break.
South Sudan’s basketball team are one of the best stories at these games. They’ve got just two more athletes competing outside of this roster.
Matildas update
On the old live ladder, the Matildas are sneaking through to the quarter-finals.
New Zealand have levelled things up 1-1 with France and that’s where it stands at half-time, while Canada and Colombia are 0-0 at the break.
Let’s hope it stays this way!
Who wins it from here?
With the quarter-finals wrapped up, this is what the men’s singles draw looks like in the tennis competition at Roland Garros.
It’s a nice-looking field.
Ledecky hits the wall
Katie Ledecky hits the wall to a stirring standing ovation, the best part of a lap clear of her rivals.
The normally reserved swimming champion slaps the water with two hands after seeing her time, which breaks her own Olympic record from Tokyo, 15.30:02.
Frenchwoman Anastasiia Kirpichnikova finished second two another rousing home crowd ovation.
A decent swim from Olympic pool debutant Moesha Johnson, who finished sixth.
As expected ...
Katie Ledecky leads the longest race in the pool by around 10 metres with 500 to go.
Moesha Johnson is back in fifth, but it would take something special to push towards the medal, with a massive gap back to the top four.
Underway in the 1500m
Settle in for 30 laps. This is the women’s 1500m freestyle, the event that Katie Ledecky has dominated for so many years.
“She leads at the start, she’ll lead at the finish,” Ian Thorpe tells us of the unbackable favourite.
Australian Moesha Johnson, who is an open-water swimmer, is in this race as well.
Star pair dumped
They had been one of the great fascinations of these games, but the Spanish combination of clay king Rafael Nadal and clay prince Carlos Alcaraz have been bundled out in their quarter-final in straight sets.
They lost 6-2, 6-4 to American pair Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram at Roland Garros.
Meanwhile, Alexei Popyrin is also out of the men’s singles draw, losing 7-5, 6-3 to Alexander Zverev.
Two in the final
Aussie pair Abbey Connors and Elizabeth Dekkers are both through to the final of the 200m butterfly.
The 20-year-old Dekkers produced a particularly impressive swim, finishing behind young gun Summer McIntosh and American Regan Smith.
That final is tomorrow morning (AWST).
The Tillies can stay alive if ...
- New Zealand don’t defeat France by any margin AND
- Canada don’t defeat Colombia
Both of those matches began five minutes ago and the sheets are blank in both games. Fingers crossed!
