Paris Olympics 2024: Live blog of day five of Games action as triathlon action gets underway
It’s day five of the Paris Olympic Games and athletes are braving the river Seine as the first triathlons get underway.

The fallout
The review of this one will be fierce back home.
And questions will start with why we played five at the back and a low block in an effort to hunker down and avoid defeat, rather than try and score in this morning’s match.
The Matildas conceded 10 goals in three games which is now a major issue and they entered the tournament with no clear idea of who would replace Sam Kerr in anything resembling a No.9 role.
It also appears Gustavsson’s time in charge could be up after a run which included the Tokyo Games and the run through last year’s home World Cup.
It’s all over
The Matildas’ hopes are now hanging by a thread and hinging on results later this morning from the other group.
They need Colombia and France to win after going down 2-1 to the United States, despite a late charge that included Mackenzie Arnold going forward from a corner

JUST MISSED
Carpenter swings a ball in and Alana Kenndedy JUST misses her chance to be the hero with a headed goal.

GOAL!
Alana Kennedy has jagged one after a move up front and Michelle Hayman flicks one onto her and the defender finishes it.
There’s six minutes of stoppage time remaining. Clare Hunt and Ellie Carpenter are the only members of the back five doing any sort of defending as they throw everything at stealing a point.

Close!
Steph Catley has just missed with a flicked header on goal that just ran wide of the right-hand goalpost with no teammate there waiting to do something with it.
We’re ticking towards stoppage time.

Raso off
There was some confusion about whether or not Hayley Raso was getting hooked when Torpey came off about 10 minutes ago, but she is being relieved now for Tameka Yallop in a last ditch attacking effort.

JUST!
A hit from Sophia Smith has remarkably ricocheted off the shoulder of Alana Kennedy and hit BOTH uprights.
It ran the whole way along the goalline before Mackenzie Arnold was able to snatch it.

Dream team locked
The United States’ team for the basketball clash with South Sudan is in.
And the interest here is Boston championship-winner Jayson Tatum, who sat out the whole of their opening game.
Double chance for the Tillies
Ellie Carpenter is starting to make things happen in a desperate late push with 12 minutes of regular time to play.
The Matildas got a quick-fire couple of efforts but they couldn’t link up with a lose Michelle Heyman.

Another one!
That might be it.
Team USA score a second goal and it’s 2-0.
It’s a good hit from outside the box from Korbin Albert, but it’s a really poor turnover by Clare Wheeler who looked inside when the ball came to her on the baseline. She wasn’t under enough pressure to make a call like that.
Our girls need to jag two goals here to keep their dreams alive.
