Paris Olympics 2024 live: Arisa Trew wins, Boomers lose to Serbia, Matt Wearn medal race called off on day 11
Australia continued its impressive run of gold medals on day 11 of the Paris Olympics, but this one had a twist that will go down in history.
Boomers firing early
The Boomers had one of their best offensive quarters in the opening term against Serbia, leading 31-17.
Patty Mills (12 points) and Josh Giddey (eight points) have carried the load early for the Boomers.
Mills continues to be a threat that can’t be ignored from deep, but the Aussie’s need to tighten up on their perimetre defence.
They have gotten lucky that Serbia hasn’t punished them, with the side shooting 2-9 from deep.
Jokic backs it up
He had been quiet early, but it was bound to happen and Nikola Jokic had no issue backing down Will Magnay in the paint for a early score.
Jack McVeigh makes up for it with a dagger three on the other end.
Trew Blue
Arisa Trew fails to improve her score with her third ride, recording a 64.95.
But the 82.95 she notched up in ride two should be enough to see her progress with a handful of riders to go in this heat.
Fellow Aussie Ruby Trew (no relation) is coming up shortly.
Beere and Bull go through
Ella Beere and Aly Bull are through to the women’s K2 semifinal after they placed second in their sudden-death quarter final.
Netherlands pair Selma Konijn and Ruth Vorsselman won the race after a strong start from the Aussies.
But they did more than enough to make up for their heat, with the top four progressing through to the semis on Thursday.
Giddey in control
Josh Giddey has come out looking good early, showing form similar from their loss to Canada where he was electric to start.
The guard has accounted six of their 12 points with the side up 12-8 before Serbia called a time out.
Giddey too silky
Jock Landale draws an early foul on a in bound play, costly given he has a job on Jokic.
Giddey went behind the back and was too smoth for the Serbians to drain a midrange shot to tie the scores up.
Patty does it himself
The Serbians get on the board first and Boomer Josh Giddey slipped on the court, giving up a costly turnover.
Their opposition took full advantage, scoring in traffic and drawing a foul.
Patty Mills went up and under the basket to get the Asussie’s on the board.
2 good to be Trew
Arisa Trew improves her score with her second ride, notching up an impressive 82.95.
With one run to go, the 14-year-old sensation is in a strong position to progress through to the final.
Boomers looking for an upset
The Australian men’s basketball team are looking for an upset as their clash against Serbia gets underway.
The Boomers only just made it out of the group stages but face a tall task against the Bulkan side that finished top of their group with an 3-0 record.
Terrific Trew
Medal hopeful and 14-year-old skating superstar Arisa Trew has impressed in her opening ride with a 72.15.
The world No.2 started her run with a backside three and followed up with a 540 spin.
She continued the fast pace but stacked with just three seconds left in her attempt, still earning a score from the judges that was on par with a complete run from other competitors.
Trew still has another two chances to go further.
