India 2-58

Jaiswal has an answer for Cummins as he attempts a shorter ball: Lean back and ramp above the slips for four.

He’s up to 29 and Kohli opened his account with a legside nudge off Cummins while facing his first delivery.

Final session begins

We’re back underway for the post-tea action, and it’s Boland to take the ball.

Virat Kohli is at the crease for his first taste of the action, having already made plenty of headlines in Melbourne. He hears a decent chunk of boos as he strides to the wicket.

India resume at 2-51.

RAHUL GOES! CUMMINS AGAIN!

That’s a big one on the stroke of tea!

Cummins sends the Aussies to the break in style. Full-ish ball, jags away a touch, and hits the top of off. Massive roar around the MCG!

He’s gone for 24 and India slump to 2-51 at the break. Australia flexed their muscles once again that session.

India 1-41

Boland can’t strike with his first six balls, and Rahul continues his bright start at the other end.

He’s about to nudge back above Steve Smith as the second-highest runscorer this series, behind only Travis Head.

He’s now 19 off 25 and has quickly eased into his work.

BOLAND TIME

The hometown hero is into the attack - and don’t the crowd love it?!

There’s a festival atmosphere at the MCG as the recalled quick enters the attack. The 6-7 from three years ago here is still fresh in the minds of most...

India 1-34

Rahul is looking sharp! He gets Cummins to the rope again, this time with a nice push down the ground past mid-off.

It’s almost Scott Boland time as we hit the eight-over mark!

India 1-23

Rahul is off the mark with a crisp drive through cover, and backs it up with a three in a similar area, to make hay off the Cummins over.

He’s started brightly on 7 and Jaiswal is 12. Can this pair replicate the 201-run stand they put on to open the second innings in Perth?

Ricky Ponting on Rohit Sharma

Legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting has laid into Indian skipper Rohit Sharma after his latest single-figure score.

“That is just a lazy, not switched on, not up for the moment type of shot. He has been known as one of the best hookers and pullers of the ball since he made his debut, but that is just not there, it is nothing,” he told Channel 7.

“It is not committed. It is not looking to be aggressive. He is just looking to tap it on the head. Might have held in the wicket, yes, might have seamed away from him a fraction, but if you are going to survive against this Australian attack you have to be switched on and making good decisions.

“If you are not, they will knock you over every time.”

Captain call looming

India could be forced to drop captain Rohit Sharma for the final Test in what now looms as a monumental decision

Sharma was dismissed for three off just six balls opening the batting in India’s first innings at the MCG.

And it was a soft dismissal too, with Sharma skying a pull shot off a chest-high bumper he should have see coming because opposition skipper Pat Cummins had a short-leg in place.

He leant on one nice drive off Cummins but was otherwise uninspiring in his brief stay.

Sharma missed the Perth Test last month for the birth of his second child, but returned to bat in the middle order in Adelaide and Brisbane. India dropped Shubman Gill to make room for their captain to play in his more familiar role for the Boxing Day Test.

The Indian skipper has not reached 20 in any match since the first Test of the three-match series against New Zelaand, which they lost 3-0.

ROHIT GOES!

And it’s a soft dismissal!

Cummins gets his opposition skipper once again. Shorter ball and Sharma looks to pull it, but he meekly balloons it to Boland who comes around from mid on. Real trouble for the skipper now as his form slump continues, and it’s 1-8!

KL Rahul - who has spent most of the series opening - comes in at No.3. He’s India’s highest runscorer on this tour.
