Final on the line

At the velodrome, Matthew Richardson’s second semifinal heat is only moments away.

A win will book his spot in the final, which will take place later tonight.

Strong start continues for Keeney

Maddison Keeney’s second-up reverse effort was also scored at a 67.5, meaning she has now dispensed with her two least favourite dives while still managing to sit second.

Several divers have made nervy starts but Yiwen has so far continued her impervious form.

Great start for Keeney!

Maddison Keeney has nailed her first dive, a back-facing effort which she finished brilliantly.

She currently sits second with her score of 67.5, behind China’s Chen Yiwen, who started with a 70.5.

Options abound

If you prefer weightlifting to diving, Australia’s Kyle Bruce is currently competing in the final of the men’s 89kg event.

The Olympic debutant is our sole representative in the event, with the action slated to start shortly.

And they’re off

Great Britain’s Yasmin Harper has opened proceedings in the women’s 3m springboard final.

As the second-ranked qualifier, Maddison Keeney will be the second-last diver to hit the board.

Time to dive

WA’s Maddison Keeney will be looking to win Australia’s first gold medal of the day when the women’s diving 3m springboard final starts in five minutes.

She has been in good form at the Games but will face a tough challenge against China’s Chen Yiwen, who will come in as the hot favourite alongside plenty of other talent in the 12-diver field.

First blood for Richardson

And it’s Matthew Richardson who has struck first, winning the opening heat.

Hoogland took the lead with two laps to go but the Australian remained calm, showing off his brilliant acceleration ability to power over the line first.

He now only needs to win one of the two remaining heats to get himself into the gold medal race.

Go Richo go

Matthew Richardson is not far away from taking to the velodrome for the first heat of his individual sprint semifinal.

He will be up against Jeffrey Hoogland of the Netherlands, with the best-of-three format seeing the first rider to win two heats go through to the final.

Clonan through

A blistering lap from Kristina Clonan has all but put her through to the next stage of the women’s individual sprint.

Qualifying has been dramatic, with Hetty van de Wouw of the Netherlands setting an Olympic record broken by Japan’s Mina Sato only moments later.

No joy in women’s individual sprint

Qualifying for the track cycling women’s individual sprint is currently ongoing before Matthew Richardson’s men’s semifinal in the same event.

Australia’s Chloe Moran looks to have missed out on qualifying for the quarterfinals, while fellow Aussie Kristina Clonan — who was involved in a huge crash in the keirin event yesterday — is yet to hit the velodrome.
